What is Acro?

At the heart of Acrobatics class (or “Acro” for short) is a fusion of endurance, flexibility, strength, balance, limbering, tumbling, basic contortion, and stunting for dancers.  In our Acro classes at Showcase Dance Studio, we teach Acro Arts professional curriculum for acrobatic dance.  We stress technically correct work on both the left and right side of the body which allows dancers to progress more quickly (in the long run) while also reducing injury.  As an Acro Arts Certified Studio, we require dancers to master all 28 skills at each level prior to moving to the next level.

As students advance through the Acro curriculum they will learn a variety of forward rolls, bridges, handstands, headstands, chest stands, splits, cartwheels, round-offs, front walkovers, back walkovers, aerials, and more!  The Acro Arts curriculum is robust and this is only a small sampling of what our dancers will learn.

Acro dance is different then gymnastics in that dancers are required to complete skills on a hard floor while integrating musicality, emotional expression, extension, control, and line.  Acro dance does not include equipment, therefore the skills are taught differently in a dance studio setting.

Most students find that their acrobatic training gives them a better sense of control and body awareness as they advance the curriculum.  With that in mind, we often recommend Acro as an excellent complement to ballet and jazz classes.  And of course, our top-most priority in all Acro classes is safety.  We strictly adhere to the Acro Arts Curriculum and only introduce safe and developmentally-appropriate movement from our certified teachers.
