Recital Hair & Makeup Guide

HAIR & MAKEUP

Makeup

All female dancers should wear makeup for the recital including blush, mascara, lipstick. Optional makeup includes foundation, eyeliner, eye shadow, and fake eyelashes. Why? The stage lights will wash out a dancer’s face because the lights are so bright.

Hair

  • All female students must wear their hair slicked back in a low bun, parted on the right side. Using a comb, draw a line from your right eyebrow to mid-scalp, and brush hair over to the left side of the scalp. The majority of the hair will be on the left side.
  • NO bangs or beads are allowed.
  • If your dancer has Ebony hair it can be braided back into a bun.
  • If your dancer has short hair, it must be pulled away from their face and slicked down.
  • Fly away hairs should be gelled down and smoothed out with hairspray.
  • Please use bobby pins and a hair net.
  • ALL HIP HOP CLASSES MUST WEAR THEIR HAIR IN A BUN.

COSTUME CARE

Costume Undergarment

  • All dancers should purchase a nude bodysuit that they will wear under their costume. Dancers should not wear underwear as it does not look professional.
  • Wearing a nude bodysuit comes in handy for: quick changes, itchiness, and costume malfunctions while dancing.

Costume Care

  • To ensure that there are no costume problems, students should not wear their costumes, accessories, or tights prior to recital photos, dress rehearsal, or the recital.
  • Hats should be stored in a hatbox or similar container to prevent damage.
  • Press all costumes prior to the dress rehearsal and the performance.
  • Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine; dry clean them only (after the recital).
  • To release wrinkles in your ballet tutus, hang them upside down on a hanger in the bathroom and immerse them with steam from the shower.
  • Fringe skirts come packaged with string wrapped around each piece of fringe. Please carefully pull this string off for desired fringe skirt movement.

Costume Racks

  • Clothing racks with wheels can be purchased from local stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Bed Bath and Beyond; if your child has several costumes, a rack is a smart investment!

TIGHTS & SHOES

Tights

  • Dancers are required to have Capezio brand tights for recital so there are no discrepancies in color and style. Please look over the recital accessory list (coming soon) for a detailed guide on color/style for each dance in recital. Tight color and style vary with class and instructor.
  • Please purchase new tights for the recital.
  • Always pack a back-up pair of tights for the recital.

Shoes

  • Please refer to the recital accessory list to ensure your dancer has the correct shoes for each dance they are in. Shoes vary with class and instructor.
  • ATTENTION all 3-6 yr old classes: Tap shoes should not have laces in their shoes. Please have elastic snaps!
  • Shoe tip! Never wear your dance shoes outside, it will ruin them!

RECITAL PLANNING

Pre-Planning

  • Recital isn’t a one-day activity. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, and make up several days in advance so you’ll know if something is missing or isn’t right.
  • Make a checklist of your child’s routines, listing their costume, tights, shoes, and any accessories, and refer to it to make sure you have all your supplies before going to the venue.
